VIERA, Fla. - Good morning from Space Coast Stadium, where the Nationals are packing up to head to Port St. Lucie for a 1:10 p.m. start against the Mets. I’m heading there, as well, but I had one tidbit to post before I hit the road: Tom Gorzelanny will make his spring debut on Thursday night in a split-squad game against the Astros in Kissimmee.
Gorzelanny, who was limited early this spring because of a sinus infection and arm soreness, threw 26 pitches in two innings of an intrasquad game last week. He’s one of the leading candidates for the fifth spot in the Nationals’ rotation.
Pitching on Thursday lines him up for that spot, and because the Nationals have a split-squad doubleheader, they can start Chad Gaudin in the first game against the Mets that day. Sometimes, this whole thing just works out.
Talk to you from Port St. Lucie.
