Adam LaRoche sits as Nationals take on Phillies

Matt Stairs starts at first base tonight for the Nationals as they take on the Phillies, hitting cleanup for the Nationals and starting at the position for the first time since 2008. Manager Jim Riggleman said LaRoche, who strained his left groin sliding into second base on Sunday, lobbied to play, but the Nationals are giving him a day or two to get better.

Stairs is also playing there because Michael Morse is out of the lineup; he’s dealing with a flu bug that has him feeling too weak to start. Riggleman said he hopes Morse will be feeling good enough to pinch hit late in the game, adding LaRoche is also available.

The tarp is currently on the field, but it’s not raining at the moment, and we should be able to start on time unless the weather drastically changes in the next two hours. Here are the lineups for both teams:
