Nationals name John McLaren interim manager

The Nationals announced today that John McLaren will be their interim manager, succeeding Jim Riggleman, who resigned after yesterday’s 1-0 win over the Mariners when general manager Mike Rizzo would not agree to discuss Riggleman’s contract status with him.

The team gave McLaren the interim title and didn’t announce how long he’d be serving in the role, though that isn’t a huge surprise; Rizzo could have someone to manage the team for the rest of the season as soon as Monday, and third base coach Bo Porter, special assistant to the GM Davey Johnson and Triple-A Syracuse manager Randy Knorr are all believed to be strong internal candidates, but not attaching a timetable to the decision gives Rizzo flexibility to work through the process of making a selection.

McLaren, who was fired as the Mariners’ manager after a 25-47 start in 2008, has a 68-88 career record.
