Cubs-Nationals lineups for Monday; Zimmerman, Morse out and Werth OK

Happy July 4. Hope you’ve carved out some time for the all-American pastime in your Independence Day celebration, between the cookouts, frosty libations and fireworks. The Chicago Cubs have arrived in D.C. for a four-game series and today’s lineups are below.

There’s both good and bad news for the Nationals. The good news is that right fielder Jayson Werth, who was struck on the left wrist by a pitch in Sunday’s game, is well enough to play, even though manager Davey Johnson told reporters yesterday that he didn’t think Werth would be able to. The bad news is that first baseman Michael Morse will miss a second straight start after being struck in the left forearm by a pitch in Saturday’s nightcap and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is out with tenderness in his abdomen.

Morse reported yesterday that the site of the contact remained sore, while the Zimmerman news is, well, new.Johnson just told reporters that Morse’s X-rays showed a hairline fracture, something that wasn’t visible in an MRI.

Ben Goessling has returned back from a weekend off and is part of the media group meeting with Johnson. He’ll have more when he gets back from the dugout.
