Rodriguez’s RBI single cuts Pirates’ lead in half (updated through fourth inning)

The Nationals put together three singles off Pirates starter James McDonald, and Ivan Rodriguez’s RBI single in the second cut the Pittsburgh lead to 2-1.

With one out, Michael Morse singled up the middle and went to second on Danny Espinosa’s single to right. Rodriguez followed with a single to center, scoring Morse and moving Espinosa to second. Any hopes of a big inning, however, were dashed when McDonald picked Espinosa off second base.

McDonald then got Ian Desmond looking at a third strike to end the inning.

After two innings, it’s Pirates 2, Nationals 1.

Update: Rodriguez couldn’t come through in the fourth to tie the game. With runners on the corners after Ryan Zimmerman’s leadoff walk and Espinosa’s two-out single, Rodriguez struck out swinging to end the threat.
