With an hour to go, four Nationals picks still unsigned

We’ve got an hour before the deadline for major league teams to sign their draft picks, and there’s no word from the Nationals about the fate of their top four draft picks. To say that’s a surprise, though, would be stretching it - they signed four players on draft deadline night last year.

They didn’t go into the final hour with four unsigned last year, but they can knock out three of them (Anthony Rendon, Alex Meyer and Brian Goodwin) with phone calls to Scott Boras. And it wouldn’t be surprising if third-rounder Matt Purke, who was projected to be a first-round pick before slipping over signability and injury concerns, got a major league deal to keep him out of next year’s draft; the TCU junior could be a top-five pick if he stays healthy next year.

Byron Kerr and I are staked out in the Nationals Park press box (where the air conditioner is jacked up so high, Byron is draped in a blanket). We’ll keep you posted as things get closer to the deadline, but it’s a safe bet that we’ll see a flurry of activity close to the deadline.
