Mesa falls to Surprise 4-2, but Mirowski throws scoreless frame

Mesa fell to Surprise 4-2 on Tuesday in Arizona Fall League play. The Solar Sox had an early 1-0 lead, and held that advantage until the bottom of the sixth, when the Saguaros tied the game. Mesa then retook the lead 2-1 in the seventh, and Surprise had a surprise waiting for Mesa in the bottom of the inning (you knew I had to try it sometime during the season) by scoring three runs off the bullpen to win the game 4-2. Omar Dunn blew the save, allowing three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Nationals prospect Richie Mirowski came in for the ninth and tossed a scoreless frame. He allowed no runs and no hits. Brian Goodwin batted second and played left field, going 1-for-3 with a run and a walk. Matt Skole played first base and hit fifth, going 0-for-3 with one strikeout and one walk. Catcher Adrian Nieto batted eighth and went 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and two strikeouts. Mesa falls to 8-3-1 and their lead over Scottsdale is now 2 1/2 games. The Scorpions have won four straight. Mesa has lost three of its last four games. On Wednesday, left-hander Matt Purke (2-0, 0.00) gets the start at 3:35 p.m. eastern from Scottsdale. Purke was nominated this week for Arizona Fall League Pitcher of the Week. The honor went to White Sox pitcher Stephen McCrary.
