Orioles roster moves and Elias on possible elbow surgery for Rodriguez (plus O's lineup)
The Orioles filled the remaining openings on their roster this morning by selecting the contract of outfielder Jordyn Adams from Triple-A Norfolk and infielder Terrin Vavra from Double-A Chesapeake and recalling infielder Luis Vázquez from Norfolk.
The trio joins infielder Jeremiah Jackson and reliever Yaramil Hiraldo, who were recalled last night.
Ryan O’Hearn, Cedric Mullins and Ramón Laureano will be by their absences from today’s lineup against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Jordan Westburg has nine hits and seven runs scored over his last three games. He's likely the starting third baseman.
Left-hander Trevor Rogers has registered a 1.49 ERA and 0.786 WHIP in eight starts.
Rogers is the third pitcher in Orioles history to post an ERA below 1.50 through his first eight starts of a season, per STATS. Hoyt Wilhelm had a 0.91 ERA in 1959 and John Means posted a 1.21 ERA in 2021. Jim Palmer had a 1.60 ERA in 1975.
The Orioles are 7-15 (.318) against the Cubs, their worst record against any opponent in team history.
Cubs rookie right-hander Cade Horton, the seventh-overall pick in the 2022 draft out of the University of Oklahoma, has posted a 3.67 ERA and 1.311 WHIP in 13 games (12 starts). He’s walked 22 and struck out 50 in 68 2/3 innings.
The kid is on a roll. Horton hasn’t allowed a run in three of his last four starts – seven innings against the Guardians, 5 2/3 against the Red Sox and 6 1/3 in his last outing against the White Sox.
Left-handers are hitting .290/.338/.372 against Horton, and right-handers are hitting .230/.320/.407.
Horton has a 2.12 ERA and 1.088 WHIP in six home games and a 5.19 ERA and 1.529 WHIP in seven road games. He’s never faced the Orioles.
Dansby Swanson is 6-for-12 with three doubles and a home run against Rogers.
The Cubs are 63-45 overall and 33-19 at home. They have a plus-113 run differential and trail the first-place Brewers by one game in the National League Central.
The Orioles lost two of three games at Wrigley Field in 2023 and swept a two-game series in 2022.

Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias said earlier today in a video call that the Orioles are finalizing the medical plan for Grayson Rodriguez, who's shut down again with elbow discomfort.
Elias said Rodriguez won't need reconstructive surgery but could undergo a debridement to remove bone fragments. A procedure is "back on the table," he said, which would end Rodriguez's 2025 season without making any starts.
However, Rodriguez's chances of returning for spring training 2026 would improve.
Elias also said he's "hopeful" that catcher Samuel Basallo and outfielder Dylan Beavers, two of the top three prospects in the organization, can make their debuts later this summer.
"They’re both having terrific seasons," he said. "They’ve both been bright spots in this organization in a tough year. To see them performing in Triple-A like that, it’s really good. They’ve come a long way and they're almost there. There's some things we're still looking for and hoping they'll do, but I do think getting them a taste in 2025 here would be a good thing for all parties."
Brendan Mortensen is in Chicago for game coverage. I’ll meet the team in Philadelphia.
