Young recalled, Orioles lineup vs. Rangers (Mateo begins rehab assignment)
The Orioles made the anticipated roster move earlier today, recalling Brandon Young and optioning reliever Yaramil Hiraldo.
Young is making his third major league start after allowing six runs and 11 hits in 8 2/3 innings. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the organization’s No. 19 prospect.
Jordan Westburg returns to the lineup, playing third base and batting second.
Gary Sánchez is the designated hitter and Chadwick Tromp is catching. Colton Cowser is in left field and Dylan Carlson is in right. Ramón Laureano is on the bench.
Laureano is hitting .583 and slugging 1.333 when ahead in the count this season.
The Orioles will try to win their seventh series. They’re 3-9 in rubber games.
The Orioles fell 7 ½ games back for the last Wild Card.
The Rangers are starting two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, who’s 7-2 with a 2.24 ERA and 0.917 WHIP in 15 games. He made only nine combined starts in his first two seasons with Texas.
deGrom has allowed two runs or fewer in his last 12 starts. He’s walked four batters and struck out 25 in four games this month.
Right-handers are batting .197 with a .471 OPS against deGrom this season and left-handers are batting .200 with a .643 OPS.
deGrom has made three career starts against the Orioles and gone 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA and 0.823 WHIP in 20 2/3 innings. He’s allowed only three earned runs (four total).
Gary Sánchez is 2-for-6 with a home run.
After ranking fifth last season at .987, The Rangers have the best fielding percentage in the majors this season at .991 after ranking fifth last year at .987. The Orioles are 24th at .984.

* Infielder Jorge Mateo begins his rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Norfolk, leading off and playing shortstop. He’s on the injured list with left elbow inflammation.
Asked whether he expects a lengthy assignment, interim manager Tony Mansolino replied, “My own personal feelings is I hope it is, just to give him a chance to play.”
“We needed him to start the year in Toronto with kind of where we were at,” Mansolino continued. “We had Jackson playing shortstop, and Jackson’s very capable of playing shortstop, but I think when you get a young player like Jackson, you just want him to get comfortable where he’s gonna be. We asked a lot out of him to do that. So we were trying to get Jorgie there with us.
“He didn’t get a chance to really go play a ton. He missed half of last year and he wasn’t playing a ton last year as well, so this is probably a good opportunity for him to go play. We miss him and we need him here, without a doubt, but given that we have health and we’ve got players playing well, I hope he gets a chance to play down there quite a bit.”
The Orioles have a six-man rotation and a short bullpen with Young starting tonight. It probably won’t stay that way.
“Not necessarily,” Mansolino said. “You guys know how this goes. It’s ever in flux. We’re constantly shuffling pieces and trying to find the right mix. We’ll see where it goes.”
Tomoyuki Sugano, Zach Eflin and Dean Kremer start this weekend against the Rays at Camden Yards.
