Steve Johnson appeared in his first major league game today, served up his first major league home run and was optioned to the minors for the second time.
That’s enough to make anyone’s head spin.
The Orioles needed to create room for tomorrow’s starter, Chris Tillman, on the 25-man roster. Johnson threw 47 pitches in two innings, including a changeup that Miguel Cabrera deposited into the right-center field seats, and didn’t figure to be available for a few days.

The Orioles needed to create room for tomorrow’s starter, Chris Tillman, on the 25-man roster. Johnson threw 47 pitches in two innings, including a changeup that Miguel Cabrera deposited into the right-center field seats, and didn’t figure to be available for a few days.
Johnson shook hands with his father, former Orioles pitcher Dave Johnson, after today’s 4-0 loss, and he expected a few hugs later in the day.
The Orioles will need to make another roster move before left-hander Zach Britton starts Tuesday.
They’re hoping to avoid placing second baseman Robert Andino on the 15-day disabled list. Andino will stay back in Baltimore and undergo an MRI tomorrow on his left shoulder.
Andino said X-rays were negative and the pain has subsided. He expects to be available again in a few days.
Andino said his shoulder “got stuck” in the dirt as he dived for Alex Avila’s ground ball, but the rest of his body continued to skid across the infield.
