Left-hander Zach Britton was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after the game. Britton is 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA in five starts for the Orioles this season. Steve Johnson will be recalled from Norfolk and make his first major league start tomorrow night against the Mariners.
Tommy Hunter, who was scheduled to start and warmed up in the 14th, will be available in relief.
Also, infielder Ryan Flaherty left the ballpark around 5 p.m. with a 103 degree temperature. It’s believed that he has tonsillitis and blood work will be done to make sure he doesn’t have mononucleosis.
Flaherty could go on the disabled list tomorrow, which would necessitate another roster move. Infielder Steve Tolleson can’t be recalled because he’s on the minor league disabled list with a broken right index finger.
Johnson (St. Paul’s) is joining the Orioles for the third time. He’s appeared in one game, giving up a home run to Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera over two relief innings.
Johnson was scheduled to start tomorrow for the Tides, so he’ll be working on regular rest. He’s 4-8 with a 2.86 ERA in 19 games, including 14 starts, with 66 hits allowed, 31 walks and 86 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings.
Johnson has allowed one run in three of his last four starts.
