Kyle Bradish’s season is over.
It isn’t due to fatigue.
The Orioles placed Bradish on the 15-day injured list this morning with lower abdominal discomfort. Reliever Yaramil Hiraldo was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.
Bradish struggled again yesterday, lasting only three innings and allowing five runs and eight hits in a 7-3 loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. He closed out August by surrendering seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings in St. Louis and permitted seven earned runs and 10 total with 16 hits in 12 innings in his three September starts.
The walks were a major issue with 16 in his last six appearances.
Bradish was in the midst of his first full season since undergoing ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow in 2024. He made 29 starts, one short of his 2023 total when he finished fourth in Cy Young voting. His 155 innings are 13 2/3 away from matching his career high.
He totaled 71 1/3 combined in 2024-25, leading to speculation that Bradish simply was running out of gas.
Bradish, who signed a five-year, $90 million extension in July, told the media again yesterday that he wasn’t tiring and that his arm felt “great.” Nothing was said about his abdomen.
Manager Craig Albernaz told the media that “everything is on the table” with Bradish, which obviously included the injured list.
“With KB, he’s such a competitor, and he’s been our guy all year,” Albernaz said. “We feel comfortable giving him the ball every time he pitches.”
The next time will be in 2027.
The season is down to 13 games. The Orioles are off again Thursday after playing three times against the Mets at Citi Field. Brandon Young, Shane Baz and Chris Bassitt are starters in the series, and left-hander Trevor Rogers could pitch Friday on normal rest.
Meanwhile, Bradish finishes with a 7-14 record, 4.12 ERA and 1.458 WHIP. He walked 70 and struck out 142. His 29 starts tied Baz for the team lead.
Left-hander Cade Povich seems like a candidate to return if the Orioles are plugging another pitcher into the rotation. Luis De León started in the minors but switched to short relief before making his major league debut.
*Outfielder Christian Franklin is beginning an injury rehab assignment today with Norfolk. He’s on the injured list with left hand inflammation.
