Catcher Samuel Basallo won’t play again over the last five games of the season.

The Orioles placed Basallo on the concussion injured list this afternoon and recalled outfielder Heston Kjerstad from Triple-A Norfolk. Basallo was removed from Monday night’s game in the seventh inning after taking a foul ball off his mask in the fifth.

Basallo sat at his locker this morning before the opener of a doubleheader against the Blue Jays.

“Concussions are so finicky,” said manager Craig Albernaz. “Sometimes it’s immediate and sometimes it kind of shows up as the night goes. Luckily, we got Sammy out when we did and the symptoms crept up at night. Obviously, you’ve seen him walk around the clubhouse. It’s quote, unquote, not a severe concussion, but during the test there were a few boxes he didn’t check.”

Basallo slashed .222/.291/.406 with 10 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs and 54 RBIs in 112 games. He missed a month with right shoulder discomfort and went 12-for-78 after his reinstatement from the IL.

“It’s his first full year and being a catcher, like we talked about all year, it’s a tough job to do that,” Albernaz said. “I think Sammy handled himself extremely well. First, on the offensive side, we all know what he can do on the offensive side. He’s shown it. He has power, he can hit to all fields, when he’s right he manages the at-bat. He hit behind Pete (Alonso) for a long time. And to protect Pete, quote, unquote, that’s a tough job, especially asking a 21-, 22-year-old player, and Sammy handled himself really well.

“Behind the plate, there was a lot of growth with Sammy, especially the behind the scenes, the unseen hours as the prep and the pitcher-catcher relationship. There was a lot there. He’s such a smart kid, wants to do everything right, and he’s done a great job of navigating that.

“The physical side, he put a lot of great work in with Joe (Singley). His receiving got better, his blocking was really good. And then outside of him playing through the right shoulder discomfort, he threw the ball really well. But with Sammy, it’s just like we talked about ad nauseum, development’s messy and sometimes it’s not always on the field. It’s behind the scenes of the prep work and making sure that you’re detailed and making sure that your time management is where it needs to be. Sammy did a great job of doing that this year.”

Kjerstad went 4-for-19 after the Orioles added him to their expanded roster and optioned him.

Second baseman Jackson Holliday, shut down with left wrist inflammation, will undergo surgery Monday or Tuesday in Los Angeles. Dr. Steven Shin, who removed Holliday’s broken hamate bone in spring training, will handle the procedure to repair a triangular fibrocartilage complex tear.

Holliday is flying out of Baltimore today.

“I’ve kind of been dealing with it for a month or so and started acting up when we got to New York,” he said. “Got an MRI and stuff, feeling all right, best as I can before having to have surgery.”

Holliday didn’t make his season debut until May 19 and batted .229/.300/.340 with 12 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 30 RBIs, 34 walks and 84 strikeouts in 98 games.

“It’s been a little interesting,” said Holliday, whose younger brother Ethan, playing in the Rockies system, underwent season-ending surgery to repair a fracture in his left foot. “It’s been kind of long for me and the fam. But I think there were some good moments. Hit lefties really well. Talking to Dustin (Lind) and just trying to reflect on what I did well and where I can improve.

“Obviously, the season’s not over but we didn’t win as many games as we’d like and look at it more that way of what I could have done to help our team win more games. And what I’ve got to do this offseason to improve and help us kind of get over that hump of starting to play winning baseball again.”

Holliday seems confident that his 2027 spring training, whenever it starts, won’t be impacted. Albernaz said the timeline depends on what the surgeon finds with the smaller ligament.

“A healthy offseason is always a huge aspect for any player, never mind a young player,” Albernaz said. “Getting Jackie out there earlier than later is gonna help him have a better offseason.”

Albernaz credited Holliday with the way he handled the hamate break and a rehab assignment that replaced his spring training work.

“He came out of the gates a little slow and rightfully so, but I think that almost two months stretch we saw of Jackie is who he is as a player. Walking, working counts, hitting the ball to all fields, showing power. And then his defensive play at second base got better as the year went.

“Yeah, there’s gonna be physical mistakes that he’s working on, but he did a great job of learning from those physical mistakes and applying them. Like his double play turns got faster, his backhand was much improved, and the range was there because he really attacked his pre-pitch. So for Jackie, it was a lot of growth, and also, he played through some things, obviously. He’s going to get surgery. But him dealing with that wrist for an extended period of time at the end of the season, it was impressive how he wanted to keep going and post and be there for his teammates.”

The Game 2 starter is TBD. A correction from earlier: A 29th player isn’t added due to roster expansion. A counter move would have to be made to accommodate him.
