He didn’t make many mistakes, and the ones he did, they obviously made him pay for it. “I’ll tell you, he had good stuff,” Showalter said after the Orioles’ 8-5 loss to the Yankees at Camden Yards. “You’ve just got to give them some credit. He didn’t make many mistakes, and the ones he did, they obviously made him pay for it. We all know we live in a results-oriented sports world, but…

“He had an extra day and he had a good fastball. He threw a changeup, 2-0 pitch, for the home run. Good call, good pitch, just got it up. It’s one of those outings, you look at the statistics and probably doesn’t match what he was carrying.”

Chen served up three homers and was charged with seven earned runs, both tying career highs in the U.S. Any concerns from Showalter that Chen could he be fatigued?

“I don’t think so,” Showalter said. “I’m real proud of the job that Rick (Adair) and the staff have done. We’ve stayed ahead of it, as you’ve seen. I don’t know what else you do. The next step is being accused of being overly precautionary.

“We feel like we’ve got a good grip on him physically. We’ll see. Sometimes, the other team’s good, too.”

Steve Johnson tossed three scoreless innings after replacing Chen and has posted a 2.00 ERA with 11 strikeouts in nine relief innings.

“He was great,” Showalter said. “He was the reason we were still in that game. Really proud of him and the work he put in the nine days since he’s pitched. The way that he and Rick and everybody have done it, it gives him a chance to pitch like that. He gave us a chance to get back in that ballgame.

“Brian (Matusz) is pitching well, too, so real proud of them. Gave us help from the bullpen like all year.”

In the end, a 7-0 deficit was too large to overcome, though Showalter never felt that the Orioles were out of it.

“No, we don’t think so at all,” he said. “In our dugout, that wasn’t the feeling. (Adam Jones) hit the three-run home run. You just have to tip your hat to their bullpen. They came in and did a good job. But it wasn’t because the ‘want-to’ wasn’t there.

“There was a lot of energy there again. The fans were great. Just a disappointment we couldn’t return the favor.”

Nate McLouth robbed Nick Swisher of a home run with a leaping catch in the ninth, but he couldn’t bring back Steve Pearce’s ball in the fourth. McLouth briefly argued fan interference.

“It’s like a foul ball. When the ball would have ended up in the stands, you’re on your own,” Showalter said. “I think what he was upset about is somebody hit his glove. That’s what he said.

“Nate was just a little frustrated that somebody hit his glove on the way up. He sure went and made a great catch in that last inning.”
