Another Oriole had offseason surgery yesterday, with the team still unable to tear away from the injury theme in 2026.
Pitcher Cade Povich posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed on his Instagram account with the words “quick cleanup.” He also added, “’27 here we come.”
A source confirmed that Povich underwent a procedure to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. Povich is expected to be ready for spring training.
Povich made eight appearances, including seven starts, with the Orioles this year. His 2026 debut came on April 5 with two runs allowed in 5 2/3 relief innings in Pittsburgh. He was recalled twice before going on the injured list May 8 with left elbow inflammation.
The injury and rehab contributed to Povich remaining out of the majors until Aug. 4, when he tossed six scoreless innings against the Angels. His last appearance was on Sept. 18.
In between was an Aug. 31 start in Colorado, when Povich allowed one run in five innings. He didn’t get the decision in a 2-1 win sealed with Colton Cowser’s leaping catch that prevented a walk-off home run.
Povich, 26, registered a 4.38 ERA and 1.486 WHIP in 37 innings. He wasn’t needed as much as anticipated with Brandon Young’s emergence, and with Shane Baz making 31 starts, Trevor Rogers 30, Kyle Bradish 29 and Young 28.
Trey Gibson made his major league debut in May and was recalled the following month when Chris Bassitt went on the IL with lower-back pain that required surgery. A possible opportunity for Povich was denied because of his health.
The rotation for next season is unsettled again with Rogers and Bassitt eligible for free agency and Zach Eflin expected to join them rather than having his $25 million mutual option exercised. The Orioles will be in the market for at least one starter and are likely to take another look at young left-hander Luis De León, the organization’s No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline who’s going back to his former role after the club used him in relief over the final month.
Povich will compete for a spot or perhaps be considered as an extra lefty in the bullpen. Otherwise, he’ll return to Triple-A Norfolk, where he made 13 starts this season and posted a 6.28 ERA.
Bradish underwent core muscle repair surgery on Sept. 29 in Philadelphia. On the same day, second baseman Jackson Holliday had a left wrist TFCC debridement in Los Angeles.
Those procedures shouldn’t impact their availability for spring training, whenever camps open.
