The Sporting News is still a thing, in digital form only. And the outlet still publishes its major league awards.

Players pick the players, managers the managers, and executives the executives.

Yesterday’s announcement on its X account promoted the “2025 awards,” which we’ll assume was a typo.

Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso was chosen to the American League All-Star team. He’s the only member of the organization to be honored.

C – Dillon Dingler, Tigers
1B – Pete Alonso, Orioles
2B – Chase Meidroth, White Sox
3B – Junior Caminero, Rays
SS – Bobby Witt, Jr., Royals
OF – Randy Arozarena, Mariners
OF – Riley Greene, Tigers
OF (tie) – Wilyer Abreu/Ceddanne Rafaela, Red Sox
DH – Yordan Álvarez, Astros
SP – Cam Schlittler, Yankees
RP – Louis Varland, Blue Jay

The White Sox’s Will Venable is AL Manager of the Year, the Tigers’ Kevin McGonigle is Rookie of the Year,  and Álvarez is Comeback Player of the Year.

The Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong is MLB Player of the Year, and the Rays’ Erik Neander is MLB Executive of the Year.

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America awards will be announced Nov. 9-12. The 11th will be busy with the Cy Young, Reliever of the Year, All-MLB teams, Hank Aaron awards, Comeback Player of the Year, Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter, and Executive of the Year.

I voted for AL Rookie of the Year and can’t reveal my ballot until the announcement, but it’s one of the deeper field of candidates that I can remember. A five-man ballot couldn’t hold the eight or so deserving players.

Vegan Insider tabbed Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo at plus-1000 to begin the season, with the Blue Jays’ Trey Yesavage the favorite. Basallo hit 18 home runs with 54 RBIs in 112 games but also slashed .222/.291/.406 and made a few stops on the injured list.

Dylan Beavers hit .228/.307/.373 with 20 doubles, nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 104 games.

No one warranted consideration on the pitching side, either. Stand down.

Alonso will appear on MVP ballots, though Álvarez is the heavy favorite after batting .316/.432/.601 with 34 doubles, a triple, 42 homers, 106 RBIs and 109 walks in 158 games. Alonso was the unanimous choice for Most Valuable Oriole after batting .267/.363/.522 with 24 doubles, 43 homers, 113 RBIs and 81 walks in 161 games.

Caminero and Witt could round out the top three after Álvarez, but Schlittler has created a buzz, as well.

Baltimore media will watch the broadcast or head to the BBWAA website to check Alonso’s vote total. That’s it.

No one else on the team is expected to appear on a ballot. Craig Albernaz won’t be in the running for Manager of the Year after a fourth-place finish. None of the pitchers are expected to receive a Cy Young vote after Trevor Rogers finished ninth in 2025.

Brandon Young’s 3.56 ERA in 28 starts isn’t going to get much notice outside of Baltimore. Only five names appear on a ballot.

The BBWAA reliever award is new this year, giving us one more to claim as our own. The Orioles didn’t have a candidate with Ryan Helsley appearing in only 17 games and Félix Bautista’s season confined to two September games. He was the best in 2023.

Man, that seems so long ago.

I also cast a vote for the DH award. Álvarez, of course, is the favorite for this one, as well.

The Orioles still don’t have an MVP since Cal Ripken Jr. in 1991, eight years after he won it for the first time. Boog Powell was the last non-Ripken to win it in 1970.

Steve Stone is the last Cy Young winner in 1980 with a 25-7 record and 3.23 ERA in 37 starts. He also tossed three perfect innings in the All-Star Game. He was out of baseball after going 4-7 with a 4.60 ERA in 15 games in 1981 and suffering a shoulder injury.

Closer Gregg Olson was the last Orioles Rookie of the Year in 1989 until Gunnar Henderson won it unanimously in 2023. Aubrey Huff is the last Oriole to receive the DH award in 2008.

Brandon Hyde was Manager of the Year in 2023 and probably should have won it in ’22. The Sporting News chose him twice.

Mike Elias was selected as the Executive of the Year in 2023.

The Silver Slugger Awards will be revealed on Nov. 17. Outfielder Anthony Santander received one in 2024, and Henderson and catcher Adley Rutschman the previous year.

The Fielding Bible Award winners also were announced yesterday and the Orioles were shut out, just like with the Rawlings Gold Glove. Those winners will be announced Nov. 1.

Crow-Armstrong was the Player of the Year and the Cubs were the Team of the Year.

Catcher Rick Dempsey is the last Orioles World Series MVP. Gotta get there to win it.
