Manager Buck Showalter said he expects Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia to take his physical today or Friday and report to the minor league complex in Twin Lakes Park “by the weekend.”
Asked what he knows about the 26-year-old Urrutia, Showalter replied, “That he’s been in Haiti for quite a while.”
“There’s a lot of unknown about what kind of shape he’s in, in more ways than one. Parasites, different things you’ve got to rule out,” Showalter added.
Urrutia agreed to a $778,500 bonus from the Orioles in July after batting .397/.461/.597 with 12 homers, 32 walks and 23 strikeouts in 305 at-bats in his final season in Cuba.
“He hasn’t been paid yet,” Showalter said. “He hasn’t been paid a penny until everything passes. It’s cash and carry here. But I look forward to getting him in. I know he is.”
Showalter continues to praise minor league catchers Chris Robinson, who’s starting for the Orioles today, and Jose Gil for their receiving skills.
Infielder Buck Britton played both split-squad games yesterday, and he’s in Fort Myers today.
