masn-baseballs-orioles.jpgIn his postgame interview today on MASN, Orioles manager Buck Showalter told Gary Thorne that Taylor Teagarden is likely headed for a stint on the disabled list.

Teagarden left today’s game when he took a foul ball that dislocated his left thumb in the last of the sixth inning. Teagarden quickly removed his mitt and headed toward the O’s dugout.

“It is just a matter of when the soreness and the swelling abates and it gets down to a point where he can catch,” Showalter said. “He’s going to probably have to go on the disabled list without a doubt. But we’re fortunate, it’s not broken. He thought it was broken as soon as he came out of there. Tea’s a tough guy and when you see him walk off the field you know he’s not going to continue.”

It seems likely now that the Orioles will recall Luis Exposito from Norfolk. He is the only other catcher on the 40-man roster.

Exposito is currently batting .218 with no homers, six RBIs and a .527 OPS for Triple-A Norfolk. He has thrown out just one of 15 base stealers so far this season. He hit .056 (1-for-18) in nine games last season with the Orioles.

Showalter revealed after today’s game that Steve Pearce is the club’s emergency catcher. With Matt Wieters moving from designated hitter to catcher during today’s game, Pearce was next man up behind the plate at that point.

“I know we got Steve Pearce’s blood boiling pretty good there,” Showalter said. “(Ryan) Flaherty can do it, too, we’ve got a couple guys. Stevie worked out today down in the bullpen. Kind of ironic that we had some work done there today and he’s going to catch a bullpen tomorrow. Still like Tea a lot better.”
