Students from Annapolis, Arundel, Broadneck, Chesapeake, Glen Burnie, Meade, North County, Northeast, Old Mill, Severna Park, South River and Southern High Schools will attend the screening. Former Orioles pitcher Ken Dixon will speak to the students about the impact Jackie Robinson had on his career prior to the movie.
Thursday’s event marks one of several activities the Orioles have done to honor Robinson’s legacy. Earlier this month OriolesREACH and ADAM JONES hosted over 100 Orioles Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) League players and coaches for a private screening of the movie. And on April 16, along with all other MLB teams, Orioles players and coaches wore Robinson’s number 42 jersey for their game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The jerseys were then auctioned online, raising over $23,000 for the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation. The club also recognized a local Jackie Robinson Foundation scholar in a pre-game ceremony that day.
Major League Baseball and Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig, in cooperation with all 30 MLB clubs, are hosting private screenings of the film “42” for thousands of teenagers across the country and in Canada. All clubs will select students in grades 8-12 from their respective communities to fill local theaters for the screenings.
Media interested in covering this event should arrive at the theater by 10:15 a.m.
