O’s starters had produced five quality starts over their last eight games, pitching to an ERA of 3.49 in that stretch before this game.

Meanwhile, Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer fanned 10 Orioles over six innings to improve to 10-0 on the year with an ERA of 3.08. He gave up seven hits and threw 113 pitches.

Scherzer is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.93 over his last six starts.

Drew Smyly retired all nine batters he faced over the last three innings with three strikeouts as Detroit pitching fanned 13 Orioles on the night.

Chris Davis homered to right in the second for his 24th homer of the season and No. 101 of his career. But Scherzer struck him out with the bases loaded and two outs to end the top of the fifth.

Manny Machado went 0-for-4 to end his 14-game batting streak, the longest by an Oriole this year and his five-game streak of multi-hit games. Machado went 11-for-24 during the five games.

The Orioles fall to 20-16 on the road and 40-31 overall with their third loss in the last nine games. Detroit has won nine of its last 13 to go to 39-29 on the year.
