BOWIE, Md – Wearing a No. 16 home white jersey, the same number he wears for the Orioles, left-hander Wei-Yin Chen has pitched two shutout innings tonight for the Double-A Bowie Baysox in a rehab start against the Harrisburg Senators.
In the top of the first, he struck out Bryce Harper.
Brian Goodwin singled to right to lead off the game before Chen fanned Harper looking on a 2-2 fastball over the outside corner. Chen followed that up with a 1-2-3 second, getting a groundout, a lineout and a groundout on just 10 pitches. He is at 23 pitches, 15 strikes over the first two innings.
Chen has been on the disabled list since May 13 with a right oblique strain. He is 3-3 with a 3.04 ERA in eight starts with the Orioles and could rejoin their rotation either next Thursday or Friday.
Update: Chen added a scoreless third inning when he fanned the first two batters and allowed a two-out single to Sean Nicol before getting a flyout to end the inning.
That is three scoreless on 40 pitches so far for Chen.
Update II: Chen struggled in the top of the fourth when Harrisburg scored four runs on two walks, two doubles and an RBI single.
Chen walked Harper to start the fourth before a strikeout and walk followed. He then allowed three straight run-scoring hits as Jimmy Van Ostrand doubled in a run, Jason Martinson added a two-run double down the third base line and Sandy Leon contributed an RBI single. Chen got a groundout and flyout to finally end that inning.
Update III: Chen threw a 1-2-3 top of the fifth on just nine pitches. He got a flyout, a pop to short and a groundout. He is at 79 pitches and that is possibly his last inning.
His line through five frames: four hits, four runs (all earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.
Update IV: Chen is coming out after five innings. Final line is four runs on five hits, two walks and five strikeouts. He threw 79 pitches.
