Eduardo Nunez bounced an RBI single up the middle to break a 4-4 tie. Lyle Overbay led off with a single and took second on Luis Cruz’s sacrifice bunt.
All 10 hits off Tillman were singles, and he tied his season high. Lots of bloops and bouncers, but they all count. He wasn’t crisp today. Not with 111 pitches on the ledger.
Tillman was 6-0 with a 2.76 ERA and four quality starts on the road this season. In nine road starts last year, he was 5-2 with a 3.04 ERA and five quality starts.
Before today, Tillman was 3-3 with a 7.27 ERA in eight career starts against the Yankees, and 2-2 with a 9.95 ERA in five starts in the Bronx.
Chris Davis has homered in eight of Tillman’s starts this year, including the last five.
Matusz is appearing in his first game since June 27. Earlier today, manager Buck Showalter told reporters that he planned on using Matusz – just not this early.
T.J. McFarland and Kevin Gausman also have warmed up in the Orioles bullpen today.
Alexi Casilla has his fourth two-hit game of the season and first since June 9.
