They fall to 1-4 on this road trip, losing to New York 5-4 at Yankee Stadium. At 48-39, the Yankees move into second place in the AL East ahead of the Orioles, who are 48-40.

The Yankees handed Chris Tillman his first lost since May 19. The Orioles had won Tillman’s last eight starts.

Tillman gave up five runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He entered today having allowed more than four runs in just two of his 17 starts on the year….For the third straight day, the Orioles lost by one run.

Tillman began today unbeaten in his last six starts and without a loss this year on the road in seven starts. He was 6-0 with an ERA of 2.68 in his past six starts and was 6-0 with an ERA of 2.76 on the road this year.

Chris Davis hit a two-run homer in the first inning today. On that one swing, he matched his homer and RBI total from last year with 33 and 85.

Davis has now homered five times in the last seven games, 13 in 23 and 22 times in his last 47 games. Davis has knocked in 33 runs over his last 23 games.

But New York rallied from down 4-2 to win, scoring twice in the fifth to tie the game and taking the 5-4 lead on Eduardo Nunez’s single in the sixth.

Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his 29th save in 30 chances on the year and Andy Petitte gave up four runs over 6 2/3 innings to get the win. Pettitte improved to 28-6 in his career against the Orioles.

Now after sweeping New York at home last weekend, the Orioles will need a win Sunday to avoid getting swept three straight this weekend.
