The Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the second inning today against Giants right-hander Chad Gaudin. Taylor Teagarden struck out, which brought Wei-Yin Chen to the plate.
Yeah, pitcher Wei-Yin Chen.
The Orioles are playing under National League rules on this interleague road trip, so Chen had a chance to help his own cause. He actually got ahead 3-0 in the count before taking two strikes and tapping back to the mound.

Chen is now 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his major league career.
Chen does his best work on the mound. He’s thrown only 19 pitches in two innings.
Nick Markakis singled in the second, making him 6-for-10 in his career as a No. 5 hitter.
Markakis hadn’t batted fifth since Sept. 4, 2007 at Tropicana Field, while Dave Trembley was managing the Orioles. He moved up to third the following game, and the rest is history.
Markakis went 4-for-5 that night in an 8-4 win over the Rays. Jeremy Guthrie started for the Orioles, with Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, Jon Leicester and Danys Baez pitching in relief.
If you claim that you’ve thought of Jon Leicester in the last year or two, I’m going to challenge you on it.
Didn’t Bradford end up with the Rays, with a PTBNL involved in the deal?
Yeah, I thought so.
By the way, the Orioles’ bench that day included Brandon Fahey, Freddie Bynum and Luis Hernandez.
Anyone feeling sorry for Trembley now? Anyone?
The starting time for the Orioles’ game in Toronto on Sept. 14 has been changed to 4:07 p.m. and will now be broadcast on MASN2.
Update: The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the third on Nate McLouth’s walk, a throwing error by first baseman Brandon Belt and Adam Jones’ sacrifice fly.
Jones has 81 RBIs this season.
Chen has thrown 31 pitches in three innings.
The Orioles are 42-20 when they score first.
Update II: Chen has retired 13 batters in a row. He’s thrown 52 pitches in five innings.
That’s good, right?
The Orioles continue to lead 1-0.
