Tillman had allowed only four runs in the first inning before today.

Manny Machado made a spectacular diving stop along the line and threw from his knees to almost retire Davidson. It was more highlight reel material. Real good.

Not that anyone is dwelling on it besides myself after Machado cranked a two-run homer in the top of the second to give the Orioles a 4-1 lead.

Machado, who singled in his first at-bat, has 11 home runs this season. He won’t hit many that travel as far.

The rally started in unlikely fashion, with backup catcher Taylor Teagarden reaching on an infield hit to make him 7-for-49 this season. Brian Roberts followed with a single, making him 6-for-11 in his last four games, and both runners moved up on Tillman’s grounder to the right side.

Let’s not overlook how the bottom third of the order contributed to a four-run inning.

Nick Markakis delivered a two-run single and Machado followed with his shot to left field.

Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his last 10 starts. The Orioles jumped him in the second inning today.

Before today, Markakis (.343) had the highest average in the history of interleague play with a minimum of 400 at-bats. He was batting .328/.358/.377 with six doubles, 17 RBIs and 15 runs scored in 29 games as the leadoff hitter this season.

Update: Tillman gave up another run in the second and he’s up to 41 pitches. He’s allowed three extra-base hits, including Didi Gregorius’ double and Gerardo Parra’s two-out triple in the second.

Adam Jones made a late jump for Parra’s ball on the warning track and it glanced off his glove before he slammed into the fence.

Update II: According to @ESPNStatsInfo, Machado’s home run was calculated at 436 feet, the longest of his career.

Teagarden and Roberts are 2-for-2 today. It’s the first multi-hit game of the season for Teagarden, though you probably made the assumption.

Roberts is 7-for-12 in his last four games.
