Boston whipped the Orioles 13-2 tonight to knock the O’s 6 1/2 games out of first place in the opener of this series and a nine-game road trip.

The 13 runs allowed tied an O’s season high and the 11-run loss matched their worst of the year, an 11-0 loss July 31 against Houston.

Wei-Yin Chen gave up eight runs and eight hits over just 3 2/3 innings in the worst start of his O’s career. Chen allowed two homers, threw 82 pitches and his record fell to 7-7 with an ERA of 3.76.

Chen gave up two homers in a game just once in his first 14 starts, but now has done that three outings in a row.

Shane Victorino hit a two-run homer off Chen, added a three-run shot off Troy Patton and a two-run double off Brian Matusz as part of a career-high seven-RBI night with Boston improving to 78-55.

When the O’s took the series opener in Baltimore on July 26 against the Red Sox, at that point they had won 15 of the last 20 games between these teams. Now they have lost three in a row to the Red Sox, even though they still lead the season series six games to five.

Winning pitcher Felix Doubront gave up two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings to improve to 10-6 with an ERA of 3.74.

In the O’s two-run third, Brian Roberts drew a bases loaded walk and Manny Machado added a sacrifice fly. But the O’s did little else against a pitcher they had scored four runs off over 4 2/3 innings in June.

The Orioles have won five straight series in Boston, but will need to win the next two nights to extend that.

With a 5-8 record over their last 13 games, the Orioles fall to 17-17 since the All-Star break, 25-26 versus the American League East and 70-60 overall.

This was not the start the Orioles wanted to an important road trip.
