NEW YORK – The Yankees scored three runs off Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen in four innings today.
They’ve come up empty against the bullpen.
Kevin Gausman, Francisco Rodriguez and Tommy Hunter have combined for four scoreless innings, with three hits allowed, one walk and six strikeouts.
Hunter stranded two in the eighth by retiring Brett Gardner on a fly ball to left field. Nate McLouth, who replaced Michael Morse, made the grab near the track to maintain the Orioles’ 7-3 lead.

Hunter stranded two in the eighth by retiring Brett Gardner on a fly ball to left field. Nate McLouth, who replaced Michael Morse, made the grab near the track to maintain the Orioles’ 7-3 lead.
Rodriguez struck out two in a perfect seventh. Gausman struck out three in two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and walked one.
Darren O’Day is warming and will work the ninth, as the Orioles try to avoid the sweep.
The Orioles’ bullpen had posted a 6.43 ERA on the trip, with 10 earned runs in 14 innings. A much different story today.
Down on the farm, Double-A Bowie catcher Brian Ward and infielder Buck Britton were promoted to Triple-A Norfolk.
Catcher Caleb Joseph will join Norfolk either Monday or for the playoffs if the Tides qualify. He has 97 RBIs and the Orioles want to give him a shot at reaching 100.
Update: Game over. The Orioles avoid the sweep with a 7-3 victory over the Yankees.
O’Day retired the side in order in the ninth. The bullpen turned in five scoreless innings, and Gausman earned his second major league win – both against the Yankees.
The Orioles are 2-4 on the road trip as they head to Cleveland for three games.
