If it seems like the Orioles have not put up a big number on offense lately, it’s because they haven’t. Since scoring seven runs in back-to-back games Sept. 1-2, the Orioles have scored five or fewer runs for 13 consecutive games.
They scored four or fewer in 10 of the 13 games and exactly five runs three other times.
This is the longest stretch of the year scoring five or less. The O’s went nine games in a row in July, but this stretch has reached 13 games and they are 6-7 in those games….If it seems like the Orioles have not put up a big number on offense lately, it’s because they haven’t. Some of the recent losses are not just about blown leads or the inability to hit with runners in scoring position. The Orioles are just not scoring much at all lately. On Saturday, they scored three runs and lost. On Sunday, they scored three and won.
In September, the Orioles are averaging 4.2 runs per game and that makes this month their second-lowest scoring month of the year. The club’s September OBP of .307 is third worst and the .735 club OPS is second worst of 2013.
Orioles’ runs per game by month:
5.1 – April
5.1 – May
4.6 – June
3.8 – July
5.0 – August
4.2 – September
A look at player averages/OPS for September:
.232/.764 – Chris Davis
.352/.962 – J.J. Hardy
.276/.863 – Adam Jones
.194/.549 – Manny Machado
.255/.649 – Nick Markakis
.282/.836 – Nate McLouth
.400/1.086 – Danny Valencia
.255/.706 – Matt Wieters
The big inning and a big game on offense for the Orioles has been missed for 13 games now. We’ll see if any of that changes over the next few days at Fenway Park.
