Urrutia’s grand slam is part of a 2-for-3 day that’s raised his average to .440 with six RBIs. He’s serving as the designated hitter this afternoon while recovering from elbow soreness, but could return to the outfield on Friday.
Urrutia didn’t have a home run in 58 at-bats with the Orioles this season.
Instant update: Urrutia also doubled today, making him 3-for-4 and raising his average to .462.
Dariel Alvarez is 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. He also has an assist from right field.
Jonathan Schoop, starting at second base, is 0-for-3 with a strikeout to lower his average to .114.
Branden Kline, the Orioles’ second-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Virginia, allowed six runs (four earned) and four hits in two-thirds of an inning, with one walk and one strikeout. He’s dragging around a 9.45 ERA in 6 2/3 innings.
Kline appeared in only seven games for Single-A Delmarva this year before undergoing surgery to repair a fractured right ankle and fibula.
According to Baseball America’s transactions page, the Orioles have re-signed minor league pitcher Matt Bischoff, catchers Zach Booker, Scott Thomas and Chase Weems, and second basemen Paco Figueroa and Shawn Roof. They also released catcher Jason Stifler, signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2009 out of Towson University.
Stifler had one at-bat since the 2010 season.
Update II: Schoop his his second home run of the AFL season. He went 1-for-5 in Surprise’s 10-9 loss to Salt River.
Urrutia was 3-for-6 with a double, grand slam, four RBIs and two runs scored. Alvarez was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
