So far, according to a Facebook page dedicated to the effort, more than $5,000 has been raised to fund the scholarships.
One scholarship will be given to a graduating varsity baseball player at Manchester Memorial High School in Manchester, N.H., Flanagan’s alma mater, who has progressed through the area’s youth baseball programs and best exemplifies the work ethic demonstrated by Flanagan, who won the 1979 American League Cy Young Award.
The other scholarship will be presented to a member of the graduating class at Manchester Memorial who plans to pursue an education in the fields of mental health or suicide prevention.
Several former Orioles have already donated to The Mike Flanagan Scholarship Fund, including relievers Mark Eichhorn and John Parrish, and longtime O’s pitching coach and manager Ray Miller. Former major leaguer Steve Balboni, like Flanagan a Manchester Memorial alum, has also made a contribution.
Flanagan’s family hopes that the continued support of donors will make the scholarships self-sustaining.
