The Orioles designated him for assignment after he batted .241 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 24 games. They’ll try to pass him through waivers.

Though angry about the move, Andino chose his words carefully while standing at his locker.

“They said I wasn’t good enough from what they’ve seen,” he said. “They feel more comfortable with Lugo, say he’s a better ballplayer than me. I guess I wasn’t good enough with what I did this spring. It’s obvious when they went and got somebody else.”

Andino said he’s been told since the beginning of spring that the utility job belonged to him.

“That’s how it is, I guess. If I clear, they want me to go play shortstop,” he said.

“I don’t think I belong in Triple-A. I didn’t hit .330 or .400 or anything like that, but for what a backup infielder’s supposed to do, I think I did pretty good. I guess not though. They just told me they thought Lugo is better and (Cesar) Izturis is better and B-Rob (Brian Roberts) is better. That’s what they told me.

“It’s a business. That’s what I’ve got to say. It’s a business and it’s out of my hands.”

The roster appears to be set barring an unexpected trade. Lugo is the utility infielder and the bullpen includes Mike Gonzalez, Jim Johnson, Will Ohman, Mark Hendrickson, Cla Meredith, Matt Albers and Jason Berken. The Orioles purchased Ohman’s contract after today’s game.
