The Orioles have recorded 12 or more hits in four straight games. The last time it happened in five was May 26-June 1, 2004 as part of a club-record seven in a row.
Adam Jones has reached base in 16 consecutive games since May 6, batting .343 (24-for-70) with two doubles, five home runs, 12 RBIs, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Jones is batting .452 versus left-handers this season, second to Victor Martinez (.459) in the American League. His .833 slugging percentage ranks third behind Jose Bautista (.884) and Martinez (.838).
In his last 162 games dating back to Sept. 25, 2012, Nelson Cruz is batting .272/.332/.529 with 43 home runs and 123 RBIs.
Left-hander Zach Britton hasn’t allowed a run in 10 straight appearances over 10 2/3 innings, striking out eight.
Manager Buck Showalter said Manny Machado’s groin is better today than anticipated.
“It’s the proverbial day-to-day,” Showalter said. “We’ll see what the next day or so brings, but we don’t think it’s a DL-able thing at this point.”
Showalter read Machado’s body language when deciding to remove him from last night’s game.
“I don’t think that’s fair to ask a player, especially someone like Manny, to make that call,” Showalter said. “Once you kind of get to know your guys, you kind of get a feel that something’s going on there that’s not normal. Even going down the line.
“He felt it in the fourth or fifth, sliding into second, I think. He said he was going to come say something in the ninth inning, but then he said, ‘No, I can make it through it.’ He said, ‘You kind of beat me to the punch.’
“He said, ‘Did you read my mind?’ I said, ‘No, I read your body.’ So, hopefully we got it in time. I’m pretty sure we got it early.”
Machado missed the first month of the season while recovering from October knee surgery.
“Everything he’s done to get back to this point, to have a setback going on the DL, we really want to try to stay away from that,” Showalter said. “Physically, what it means to our club as much as emotionally and mentally, too.”
The Orioles are deciding whether to have reliever Tommy Hunter, on the disabled list with a strained left groin, accompany them on the next road trip, stay in Baltimore or report to the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota.
“A lot will have to do with the evaluation of whether he’ll maybe throw somewhere during the trip,” Showalter said.
Showalter turned 58 today.
“I messed up my math,” he said. “I thought I was 59 and I got to thinking about it on my way in and I said, ‘I’m only 58.’ I picked up a year. It made my day.”
