Single-A Delmarva outfielder Josh Hart will have arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and the recovery time is four to six weeks. So the hope is Hart can return to play later this summer.
The Orioles’ No. 13 prospect according to Baseball America, Hart was injured in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday night. He was going back to play a ball of the wall when the injury happened.
Hart was the Orioles’ second draft pick in last June’s First-Year Player Draft. After the club took Hunter Harvey 22nd overall, the Orioles selected Hart with the 37th pick. He was a supplemental first-round pick.
The surgery will take place in the next day or two in Florida and Hart will then report to the club’s Sarasota complex for rehab.
The 19-year-old Hart was batting .266 with one double, no homers, 15 RBIs and a .573 OPS for the Shorebirds. He stole six bases in eight attempts and was batting .304 with runners in scoring position.
The Orioles drafted Hart out of Georgia’s Parkview High School. Hart got a $1.45 million bonus, reported to the Gulf Coast League Orioles and ended the 2013 season at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He hit .218 in 36 games.
