ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Orioles catcher Matt Wieters underwent ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow today in Gulf Breeze, Fla. The operation was performed by Dr. James Andrews and didn’t include any complications.
Andrews replaced a ligament in Wieters’ elbow with a tendon, shaved a bone spur and transposed a nerve. Wieters will spend tonight in the hospital and most likely travel to Atlanta on Wednesday.

Wieters is scheduled to begin rehabilitation in some form right away, but the recovery time for the procedure is about nine months, shorter than if he were a pitcher.
In other news, right-hander Steve Johnson, who is on the seven-day minor league disabled list with right shoulder tendonitis, threw yesterday in Sarasota. Johnson had been limited to playing catch.
Infielder Michael Almanzar, on the 60-day disabled list with a left knee injury, will begin playing for the rookie-level Gulf Coast Orioles on June 20.
Right-hander Dylan Bundy, on the DL while rehabbing from “Tommy John” surgery, will make at least two more starts for short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He’s working in a six-man rotation with the IronBirds.
