The Orioles optioned pitcher Miguel Gonzalez to Triple-A Norfolk today and announced that he will start Thursday against Rochester at Harbor Park.
Gonzalez’s next start with the Orioles is scheduled for July 22 in Anaheim.
This is the same plan as the one implemented for Bud Norris, who was optioned to Double-A Bowie. Norris will start Monday morning at Prince George’s Stadium before rejoining the Orioles and starting against the Angels on July 21.
Manager Buck Showalter is trying to keep his starters on a regular schedule during the break and is taking advantage of having some optional pieces in his rotation.
Gonzalez will be able to attend daughter Leah’s first birthday party in Pacoima, Calif., before joining the Orioles in Anaheim.
The Orioles will officially recall Kevin Gausman on Sunday and place Ubaldo Jimenez on the disabled list with a right ankle injury. Gausman arrived at Camden Yards today.
Showalter repeated that Gausman no longer is on an innings limit.
“He’s ready to pitch until our season ends,” Showalter said. “I know he’s pretty happy about it.”
Steve Clevenger, recalled today from Norfolk, could spend five games with the club before heading back down on July 21.
“Steve makes our bench better and gives us some options,” Showalter said.
Dylan Bundy’s next start for Single-A Frederick is Wednesday night in Salem.
