Meanwhile, the Orioles remain in the mix for Cubs utility player Emilio Bonifacio, according to a source. Various reports have included the Royals, Pirates, Mariners and Giants as other teams with interest.

Bonifacio is almost certain to be traded later today. He’s just in a holding pattern.

The Red Sox are averaging a deal every 15 minutes. I heard they’re trying to package Fred Lynn and Jim Rice, though I haven’t gotten it confirmed.

Left-hander Andrew Miller should be next, and there are plenty of suitors, including the Orioles. The two sides have been talking.

Miller has held left-handers to a .150 average this season, and right-handers are batting .180 against him. How do you like those splits?

This is why Miller is the most appealing left-handed reliever on the market, and why the Red Sox are asking a lot in return. The Orioles want a late-inning southpaw who’s more than a specialist, and Miller fits the description.

Assuming that Miller winds up in Detroit, the Orioles can turn to the second tier, which includes the Rangers’ Neal Cotts and the Diamondbacks’ Oliver Perez.

Keep in mind that the Orioles and Mariners discussed a Perez trade at last year’s deadline. It never materialized, and the Orioles acquired starter Bud Norris from the Astros.
