BOSTON – Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is flying to Baltimore tonight and will undergo an MRI on his back Tuesday morning.
Hardy said he’s still bothered by some soreness in his back, but he added that he’s not experiencing spasms and the muscles aren’t tightening, which leaves him encouraged that it’s nothing serious.
Hardy added that he’d probably play under different circumstances, but it’s not worth risking a lengthy absence.

Hardy hasn’t played since Friday night against the Rays at Tropicana Field. He’s out of the lineup again tonight, with Ryan Flaherty starting at shortstop.
Hardy performed baseball activities earlier today – swinging a bat, taking ground balls and throwing. He later met with manager Buck Showalter and the decision was made to schedule an MRI.
At this point, it makes sense for Hardy to remain in Baltimore and wait for the team to return following Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Red Sox. The Orioles are off Thursday.
Hardy came out of the lineup last Monday afternoon against the Twins due to a spasm in his lower back.
More to come.
