This isn’t how they envisioned it.

Bergesen was charged with five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, leaving his ERA after one appearance at 9.64.

“It was a tough outing,” he said. “They hit some bad pitches and they hit some good pitches. Hopefully I’ll make some adjustments the next few days and get after Tampa Bay.”

Bergesen sensed that it might be a rough day when he allowed a hit on an 0-2 pitch early in the game.

“Then it just snowballed from hitter to hitter until I kind of started finding a groove for the next three innings,” he said. “By that time, I was done.”

At least he was spared the loss when the Orioles tied the game on Miguel Tejada’s two-run homer in the fifth.

Bergesen said his emotions were “flying high” for the last four days as he anticipated this start and recalled the injuries to his shin and shoulder that kept him off the mound.

“I’ve really been looking forward to this start,” he said. “I was just really excited about it. I don’t know if I was overly amped, but hopefully we’ll get them next time.”
