Roberts has been instructed to take off the next three days before attempting to work out. He also will need to get some at-bats at the minor league camp or with an affiliate before returning to the lineup.
The Orioles don’t know whether Roberts will be ready to come off the disabled list when he’s eligible on April 25.
“They told me it was an abdominal strain,” manager Dave Trembley said. “I don’t know if there’s something else going on with his back again. I’m not sure about that.
“Obviously, it is a major loss. We’re going to have to pick up the pieces and fill in the best we can. He’s very valuable to the club, the guy who sets the tone for us offensively. You don’t replace it. I think you just try to do the very best you can to fill in while he’s gone.”
In Roberts’ absence, Trembley could choose to bat Felix Pie, Julio Lugo or Adam Jones in the leadoff spot. Cesar Izturis also would be an option.
Trembley won’t classify Lugo as the regular second baseman, saying that he could choose a more offensive-oriented player one night and go with the better defensive player on another night. Trembley also said that Justin Turner is here to provide depth.
The Orioles didn’t consider bringing up another pitcher to replace Mike Gonzalez, who left the team for one day to be present for the birth of his daughter in Arizona.
“We lost a second baseman. Let’s replace him with another second baseman,” Trembley said.
