MIAMI – The Orioles were expected to add a bullpen arm for today’s series finale against the Marlins, and right-hander Chaz Roe has arrived in the visiting clubhouse. There’s a No. 65 jersey in his locker stall, but the Orioles haven’t announced a roster move to add Roe to the 25-man roster.

Roe, signed as a free agent in December, is 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA and two saves in 17 games at Triple-A Norfolk. He spent much of last year at Miami’s Triple-A New Orleans affiliate, posting a 3-3 record and 3.66 ERA in 47 games. Roe has 24 games of major league experience with the Diamondbacks (2013) and Yankees (2014), with a career 1-0 record and 4.44 ERA in 24 games.
There are multiple ways the Orioles could create roster space for Roe. They could option right-hander Oliver Drake, who tossed three scoreless innings in his major league debut last night and will probably be unavailable for a couple of days. Or they could send left-hander T.J. McFarland back to Norfolk, where he would work in the starting rotation.
Because Roe is not on the 40-man roster, the Orioles must make another move to free up a spot. They could move second baseman Jonathan Schoop, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament and a medial collateral ligament sprain in his right knee, to the 60-day DL.
If you predicted that the Orioles clubhouse on this date would include Mike Wright, Drake and Roe, step to the head of the class.
Update: The Orioles have posted their lineup and McFarland’s name is missing from the available pitchers. That means he’s heading to Norfolk.
Update II: The move is official – Roe is in, McFarland has been optioend. Left-hander Wesley Wright has been moved to the 60-day disabled list to accommodate Roe’s placement on the 25-man roster.
