Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz has received an eight-game suspension from Major League Baseball for having a foreign substance on his right arm in the 12th inning of Saturday night’s game against the Marlins in Miami.
The ban was announced this morning by Joe Garagiola, senior vice president of standards and on-field operations for Major League Baseball.
The suspension was scheduled to begin this afternoon, when the Orioles open a three-game home series against the Astros, However, Matusz has elected to file an appeal, so the suspension will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is complete.
Matusz’s suspension is comparable to the eight-game ban handed to Milwaukee left-hander Will Smith, who was also found to have an illegal substance on his non-throwing arm in a Thursday night game against the Braves. Smith is also appealing his suspension.
