As a pending free agent who could command a four-year deal, Chen most likely is making his last start with the Orioles.
“I expect him to pitch like most of his time here and hopefully will continue to,” said manager Buck Showalter. “Professionally, he’s going to give us a chance to win. Very quietly, he’s what, seventh or eighth in the American League in ERA? Comparatively speaking, he’s been very solid all year.”
Chen is tied with the Rays’ Jake Odorizzi for seventh in the AL with a 3.35 ERA. He’s exceeded 30 starts and 185 innings in three of his four seasons in Baltimore.
“I’m very proud of his health and everything he’s been able to maintain,” Showalter said. “Every time he’s taken the mound for us, I like our chances. He’s one of the better acquisitions any team has made in quite a while. He’s been very solid for us. Very good evaluation, very good sign. Hopefully, it will continue.”
