Orioles top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy has been scratched from his scheduled start today in the Arizona Fall League. It was to be his third outing in the AFL.

dylan-bundy-white.jpgBundy had made two one-inning starts in the AFL. A week ago today, he pitched a 1-2-3 inning on just seven pitches for Peoria against Mesa. On Friday, he threw 19 pitches against Surprise, allowing two hits and one run. Those outings were Bundy’s first game action since May 21, when he pitched for Double-A Bowie.

Bundy threw all four pitches in that most recent outing, showing a fastball, slider, curveball and changeup. His fastball had topped out at 94 mph in the AFL. Back in May, he touched 96 mph in some Bowie outings.

Bundy has been limited to 63 innings since the start of the 2013 season. He underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2013. Earlier this year, just as his comeback from that surgery was about complete, he developed a rare shoulder issue that set him back again. He felt discomfort caused by calcification in the Teres minor muscle behind his right shoulder. He was finally cleared to resume throwing last month.

Bundy, ranked as the Orioles’ No. 1 prospect four consecutive years by Baseball America, went 0-3 with a 3.68 ERA in eight starts in April and May for the Baysox. While it appears the Orioles are not ruling out Bundy pitching again in the AFL, which has two weeks to go, that may be unlikely after today’s news.

Jason Garcia will make today’s start for Peoria in place of Bundy.
