The Yankees (9-16) scored three runs in the sixth off Wilson and went on to beat the Orioles 7-0 tonight at chilly Camden Yards to snap their six-game losing streak. The Orioles fall to 15-11 as their six-game winning streak over the Yankees ends.
Wilson began the sixth in a scoreless game at 69 pitches after he needed just seven pitches in a 1-2-3 fifth. But New York used three hits and a costly error on Wilson to get the lead.
With one out, Jacoby Ellsbury singled and stole second. He went to third on Brett Gardner’s single. Carlos Beltran’s sac fly to center made it 1-0. Center fielder Adam Jones might have had a play at the plate but did not throw home. A walk and Brian McCann’s RBI single followed for a 2-0 lead. Then Starlin Castro hit a dribbler out in front of the plate. Wilson charged in and fielded it but made a low throw that got by first baseman Chris Davis for an error on Wilson and a 3-0 lead. That run was unearned.
Wilson went six innings, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and four strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches and falls to 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA. New York added four runs in the eighth off T.J. McFarland and Dylan Bundy to put this game away. McCann added a two-run double for a three-RBI night and Ellsbury went 3-for-3 with two walks.
Sabathia pitched seven scoreless innings on 99 pitches. He gave up six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. He entered the game with an ERA of 5.06 for the season. But he improved to 2-2 with an ERA of 3.81.
Manny Machado doubled in the first – his 12th on the year – but was stranded. The Orioles hit into double plays in the third, fourth and sixth innings. They left the bases loaded in the eighth. They went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and were shut out for the second time, the other being April 25 against Tampa Bay.
Machado, who began the night one double off the league lead, had two tonight and has 13 on the year. He is batting .355.
The game tomorrow night will decide this three-game series with Kevin Gausman (0-1, 2.45 ERA) facing Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 2.87 ERA).
