The Orioles made a couple of anticipated roster moves today, activating pitcher Vance Worley and catcher Caleb Joseph from the disabled list, and optioning pitcher Oliver Drake and catcher Francisco Pena to Triple-A Norfolk.
They also made an unanticipated move in their bullpen, placing T.J. McFarland on the 15-day DL with a left knee injury and selecting the contract of Chaz Roe from Triple-A.
Manager Buck Showalter confirmed the moves in his pregame press briefing in Seattle.
Worley is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in 17 games with the Orioles, including two starts. He hasn’t pitched since straining his right groin muscle on June 12 in Toronto.
Worley allowed two runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings after relieving Ubaldo Jimenez in a 10-9 loss at Rogers Centre. Jimenez retired only one batter in the shortest outing of his career.
The Orioles kept Worley on a two-game injury rehab assignment. He allowed one run and five hits in 1 2/3 innings at Double-A Bowie and most recently tossed three perfect innings at Single-A Frederick.
Worley gives the Orioles another long reliever in their bullpen, where he’s been most valuable.
Drake (Navy) worked back-to-back games in San Diego and surrendered six runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings. He failed to record the final out yesterday, allowing three runs and forcing manager Buck Showalter to bring in Mychal Givens.
Drake has permitted six runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings with the Orioles, walking five batters and striking out six.
Roe was 1-2 with a 2.39 ERA and four saves at Norfolk.
