The Cubs selected Patterson with the third overall pick in the 1998 draft. He’s a career .252 hitter in 10 major league seasons with five teams. He turns 31 in August.

The Orioles acquired Patterson from the Cubs in January 2006 for minor leaguers Nate Spears and Carlos Perez. He hit .276 with 19 doubles, five triples, 16 homers, 53 RBIs, 45 stolen bases and a .757…Corey Patterson is more than just the older brother of Oakland’s Eric Patterson.

The Orioles acquired Patterson from the Cubs in January 2006 for minor leaguers Nate Spears and Carlos Perez. He hit .276 with 19 doubles, five triples, 16 homers, 53 RBIs, 45 stolen bases and a .757 OPS during the ’06 season, and .269 with 26 doubles, two triples, eight homers, 45 RBIs, 37 stolen bases and a .690 OPS in ’07.

The Orioles let Patterson become a free agent after their second season together. As I recall, he was considered miscast as a leadoff hitter because of his overly aggressive approach at the plate.

In 2006, Patterson totaled 21 walks and 94 strikeouts in 463 at-bats. In 2007, he had 21 walks and 65 strikeouts in 461 at-bats.

Patterson’s production took a major dip after he left the Orioles. He batted .205 with 17 doubles, two triples, 10 homers, 34 RBIs, 14 stolen bases (in 23 attempts) and a .582 OPS in 135 games with the Reds in 2008. He appeared in only 16 games between the Nationals and Brewers last year, going 3-for-29 with 13 strikeouts.

The Orioles signed Patterson to a minor league contract on April 21 after he failed to make the Mariners’ roster out of spring training. He batted .368 with five doubles, a triple, two RBIs and a .911 OPS in 14 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

Though he’s primarily a center fielder, Patterson also played left and right with Norfolk.

Patterson enjoys long walks on the beach and spending time with his family. He dislikes rude people and nasty cutters.
