BOSTON – Steve Pearce received a platelet-rich plasma injection today in his right elbow area and is shut down indefinitely.
Manager Buck Showalter didn’t provide much detail, saying only that Dr. David Altchek found what the Orioles were anticipating.
Showalter added that Pearce could return later this month “in some capacity.”
Meanwhile, the Orioles will select infielder Paul Janish’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk before Thursday night’s game against the Rays at Camden Yards. Janish is here on the 24-hour taxi squad.
Showalter wanted an extra infielder in Pearce’s absence. He also noted that Rule 5 outfielder Joey Rickard could come off the 60-day disabled list Monday after playing in three simulated games down in Sarasota.
Showalter indicated that another outfielder could be added to the roster. He mentioned Dariel Alvarez and Christian Walker as possibilities. Both players have been discussed.
The Orioles will need to make two moves to clear spots for Janish and Rickard on the 40-man roster.
The starter for Sunday’s game against the Rays remains TBD.
Showalter explained Ryan Flaherty’s presence in the lineup by referencing the matchup with Rick Porcello and the Maine native’s past success at Fenway Park.
Flaherty is 6-for-11 with a home run versus Porcello, and he’s a career .337 hitter in 94 plate appearances in this ballpark.
Showalter wanted to play Flaherty in this series and the Red Sox started left-handers in the first two games. That’s also why Hyun Soo Kim has been on the bench.
