Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda hasn’t completed six innings in any of his five starts this month, but he’s allowed only five earned runs in 23 2/3 innings. He’s surrendered only three home runs.
Pineda has faced the Orioles twice this season and allowed two runs in 10 innings. He’s struck out 12 batters. In 11 career starts, he’s 4-2 with a 3.73 ERA and is averaging 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings to match his season total.
J.J. Hardy is 9-for-20 with three home runs against Pineda. Adam Jones is 10-for-29 with two doubles and a home run, and Manny Machado is 6-for-15.
Jonathan Schoop is 2-for-15 with a double and home run. Ryan Flaherty is 1-for-14 with six strikeouts.
The Yankees are listing TBD for Saturday’s starter and right-hander Luis Cessa on Sunday. Left-hander Wade Miley starts Saturday for the Orioles and Kevin Gausman could go Sunday unless the Orioles clinch the top wild card and manager Buck Showalter decides on someone else.
