After the game, Dave Trembley said he did not want to say publicly if he agreed with Alfredo Simon throwing a split-finger pitch on that 0-2 count to Austin Kearns in the ninth inning.
The pitch found the middle of the plate and was not low in the zone as you intend with the splitter and Kearns three-run homer gave Cleveland a 4-2 lead.

“It was a split ball that didn’t do too much. It was up and they got a good swing on it. I felt good but the split was not good tonight. I tried to work hard to get it down, but it was up and they got a home run.
“I tried to make the pitch down, but it was not working today.”
“Sometimes you make mistakes and you learn from that. I threw the ball a little across my body and got behind in some counts,” Simon said after his first blown save in six chances.
He also said he felt bad for Brian Matusz who did not get a win after pitching seven shutout innings.
“He threw a real good game, I say sorry to him because he worked hard to win the game.”
Simon had not allowed an earned run over his first eight innings this year, but tonight gave up four runs and three hits in just 1/3 of an inning.
