Finalists Manny Machado and Chris Davis were denied tonight at their respective positions, leaving the Orioles without a winner for the first time since 2010.

Machado, a two-time winner at third base in the American League, lost tonight to the Rangers’ Adrian Beltre. Davis, a two-time finalist at first base, lost to the Rangers’ Mitch Moreland.

Beltre also received the honor in 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012. Moreland is a first-time winner after Eric Hosmer won it the past three seasons.

Machado committed seven errors in 329 chances at third base for a .979 fielding percentage. His 2.2 defensive WAR led the finalists. Beltre led all AL third baseman with a 14.6 defensive index, with Machado placing third at 9.3.

Last year, Machado joined Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson as the only Orioles third basemen to win multiple Gold Gloves. Robinson earned 16 in a row from 1960-1975.

Davis posted a .993 fielding percentage at first base and his 39 scoops, per FanGraphs.com, led the finalists. Moreland committed only two errors for a .998 percentage and led all first basemen with a 6.2 defensive index. Davis was second at 4.3.

The Orioles had multiple winners in four consecutive seasons before 2015, when Machado earned his second Gold Glove. Right fielder Nick Markakis and catcher Matt Wieters won in 2011; Wieters, center fielder Adam Jones and shortstop J.J. Hardy won in 2012; Machado, Hardy and Jones won in 2013; Hardy, Jones and Markakis won in 2014.

Jones won in 2009, the first Oriole to be recognized for defensive excellence since pitcher Mike Mussina in 1999.

Gold Glove winners are selected by a vote of major league managers and coaches, accounting for 75 percent, as well as the SABR Defensive Index.

Note: Minor league catcher Chris O’Brien, 27, has been suspended 50 games without pay after testing positive for an amphetamine. The suspension begins at the start of the 2017 season.

O’Brien, the son of former major league catcher Charlie O’Brien, batted .186 in 65 games at Double-A Bowie and .156 in 13 games at Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles acquired him from the Dodgers in April 2015 in the Ryan Webb trade.
